Kirstie's Here!

Kirstie was born July 24th-- our little pioneer baby! There were a few things we didn't want-- we didn't want a 24th of July baby and we didn't want a c-section. Well, we ended up with both. Looking back though, we're just very happy that she's here. She's the most adorable baby ever! She is tiny. She only weighed 5 pounds, 15 ounces when she was born. Brent and my mom each went out to buy some preemie clothes and diapers because nothing fit. The tiny newborn diapers would just slide right off her!

The night we took Kirstie home from the hospital, she was fussy and wouldn't stop crying. She had a fever of 101! We rushed her up to Primary Children's where we spent the next few days doing all sorts of tests. The scariest moment was when they suspected menangitis because the white blood cell count in her spinal fluid was high. After a long 36 hours of waiting for the results of the cultures, we were told that the blood culture was growing bacteria. They would have to take more blood and wait another 36 LONG hours for more results. It was so hard to see our little 4-day old girl being poked and prodded all night and day. She was hooked up to so many IVs and monitors. But she was very brave and handled everything so well. All the nurses and doctors were amazed at how well she handled everything. The second blood culture was negative. In the end, they determined that she was dehydrated. When she was born she had a low body temperature and it took all she had to get it back up. So she was not getting nourished like she should have been.

She's doing much better now. She's made it back up to her birth weight and has almost outgrown the preemie diapers. The past few weeks have been full of doctors appointments, but we're so glad she's doing better!
