Kirstie the Kindergartner

Today we started a new chapter in our family's life: Kindergarten!!  Kirstie has been looking forward to this day for so long-- it's been a long summer since preschool got out!  Last night we were talking to her about how she felt about starting school.  "Are you excited for Kindergarten?" we asked.  "YES!!"  "Are you nervous?"  "Noooo, " said with a confused look on her face, as if to ask Why would I be nervous?  We "practiced" getting ready for school all last week.  We're used to having lazy mornings where the kids crawl into bed and watch tv for a bit before getting a move on things.  So, last week we worked on getting up and getting ready for the day first off.  It paid off today.  She was ready for school about 20 minutes before we needed to leave!

This is the outfit we gave her for her birthday.  We decided that we'd save it for school.  She hates wearing anything but skirts and is definitely not a fan of denim.  So, I took a chance with these sparkly, rainbow-beaded capris.  Isn't she cute?  And oh boy does she love her new sparkly silver shoes!

Kirstie is in morning kindergarten with some friends from the neighborhood, William, Tom and Amber.  We were all originally in afternoon kindergarten, but the school called me a couple of weeks and asked if we wanted to switch to morning.  They were trying to balance out the classes.  I didn't want her to be the only one in the neighborhood in morning, so a few phone calls later and she had some friends in there with her!

Her teacher is Miss Brinton.  I think she'll be a really good match for Kirstie.  We hear that she sings and sings and sings, so already we know that Kirstie will like her!  I've been very impressed with her teacher each time we've met and talked with her.

Miss Brinton had the kids wave good-bye to all the parents as they went inside for a fun first day!  I was so proud of myself for not getting emotional-- at least not in front of Kirstie.  After they went in, some moms and I were talking and my friend (who has older kids) asked how I was doing.  That's when I get emotional and let a few tears fall.  The saddest part is that we're entering a new phase of life.  I've really enjoyed having my kids home with me all day and having freedom to what we want, when we want.  I love my kiddos and love spending time with them!  But I am excited for all the adventures Kirstie will have this year!

Kirstie came home from school, happy as can be!  We can't wait to see what the school year brings!

Last night I asked Ian what he thought he and I should do while Kirstie was at school.  Boy, did he have some big plans for us!  He thought that we should go to the park, then watch a movie, do puzzles and then play games.  After dropping Kirstie off, Ian and I went for a walk with some friends.  When we got home, he headed straight for his room, "I'll get the puzzles mom!"  We spent a lot of time doing puzzles and laughing together.  He's such a funny kid!  During this time, I opened up the computer to load a picture of Kirstie onto Facebook.  Ian wasn't about to have that.  He made me put the computer away and give him my undivided attention-- always a good thing to do!  He was a little bummed when we had to stop doing puzzles and go to the store. (It was an absolute necessity, otherwise we wouldn't have!)  But we came home, did more puzzles, and then left to get Kirstie.  I'm so grateful to have this time to spend one-on-one with my little guy!!
