Kirstie has been learning about insects in preschool. Her teacher told us we could catch a bag in a jar and bring it into class-- especially a praying mantis. The other night we found a praying mantis sitting on our garbage can! The kids were so excited to see it-- they wouldn't leave it alone. They had to say good-night to before they'd go to bed. Ian kept trying to "look" at it by moving and shaking the jar.
It's not a very clear picture, but you get the idea.
Kirstie was so excited to take it to preschool the next day! Mrs. King took it out of the jar and let it crawl along Kirstie's arm. "It tickled" she told me. Then they caught a fly and watched the praying mantis eat it. Gross. Mrs. King is a lot braver than I am.
