Last month Kirstie and the first grade went on a walking field trip to a local vegetable garden. The garden is grown by the church and produce is donated to the bishop's storehouse and other places. There is even a spot reserved for the local missionaries.
We saw many different plants-- zucchini, corn, carrots, watermelon, grapes, pumpkins, lettuce, tomatoes and so many others that I can't remember right now.
The kids got to pick some grapes from the vine to try. They were seeded, so not many kids liked them. Kirstie loaded up on grapes and decided to save them-- in her pocket. Glad I caught that one in time!
Whitney, Alyssa, McKinley, Miley and Kirstie. Making new friends has been a struggle this year. All the other kids in our ward are in a different class, so that's been hard. But lately she's become good friends with McKinley and Miley. It's good to see her find her niche in first grade.
Each kid got to pick a carrot. We learned that it's easier if you push it down, then pull it up. You learn something new everyday!
Lots of kids trying to wash off their carrots in this tall sink.
Finally they got to eat them! Most kids didn't like them-- they were kinda bitter. But Kirstie ate all of hers. Afterwards she said she didn't really like it, but why waste food, right? It turned out to be a warm day, and the walk home was a nice slow pace-- perfect this pregnant mom! It was fun to be with Kirstie and watch her interact with her peers. I'm so glad I get to stay home and help in the classroom in different ways!

Cute! I remember going with Caden on this same field trip. He still talks about picking and eating carrots and grapes there. :)
